Vocabulary should be meaningful, memorable, and useful.
Teaching math vocabulary allows the students to move beyond operations into problem solving by using reasoning to solve the problems. Math vocabulary is a little different than other content-area vocabulary. Many math words have a general and a specific meaning. There are three challenges that go along with that fact.
With this being said, it is very important to not only teach vocabulary in an english or reading classroom but also spend some time in a math classroom on vocabulary words as well. - Students are familiar with a lot of the words but their meanings are different that what they mean in a mathematical situation. An example of this is the word product. Outside of math context, product means something produced for consumption but in math it means the answer to multiplication.
- Mathematics curriculum materials contain new words that represent new thoughts.
- Vocabulary complexity of mathematics increase due to the fact that some lessons present extra words that are supposed to help connect concepts with real world experiences.
