Teach-Teach-Trade
This strategy is wonderful when teaching students new words. It also gets the students talking and teaching other students. The following are the steps teachers should take when using this strategy.
This could also be done by having each student pick a word out of the section of the textbook that they believe is important to learn. Another option is having the students continue to teach the same word to everyone in class. The more one teaches the same word, the more likely he or she will deeply understand the word and make the word his or her own.
This strategy requires students to use clues to the meaning and pronunciation of words. It helps the students realize that definitions may not be directly in the text and they have to use a glossary or dictionary to define a word. Teach-Teach-Trade gets students out of their seat and moving around the room.
- Identify important words that the students need to know from the textbook.
- Write each word on a separate 5"x8" card or a half sheet of paper and have each student choose a card.
- On the front of the card, the students need to define the word and draw a picture that represents the word. On the back of the card, the students need to write the word in a sentence or two. (The students may use references like their texts, notes, or the glossary).
- Check for accuracy on their cards and have them redo their cards if necessary.
- Partner the students up and have them teach each other their word by reading their word, definition, and sentence to them.
- Have students trade cards, find a new partner, and teach the new word to another person.
- Continue Teach-Teach-Trade until each student has taught a new word to everyone in class.
